Nike vs adidas sizing: men's tops charts compared

Compare selected Nike and adidas US men's tops chest ranges. See why the same letter can point to different body sizes without proving one brand runs small.

THE QUICK ANSWER

The same letter does not cover identical chest ranges in these two US men's tops charts. For example, a 40-inch body chest falls within Nike's M range and adidas's L range in the reviewed charts. This is a chart starting point, not a comparison of two finished garments.

What the 40-inch example actually tells you

The chart labels differ even though the person's measurement has not changed. Start with the appropriate row on each brand's current chart, then examine the two actual products. If a measurement falls between published endpoints, use the retailer's own between-size instructions rather than filling the gap with an invented rule.

Imagine the Nike item is a fitted training top while the adidas item is a roomy sweatshirt. The two chart rows do not tell you which finished item is wider. You would need product dimensions, fit descriptions and fabric information for that comparison.

Does adidas run smaller than Nike?

This table shows a difference in label-to-body mapping for one category. It does not establish a brand-wide tendency, or prove that a particular adidas shirt is tighter. Keep a claim about the chart separate from a claim about how a garment fits.

For a useful wardrobe comparison, pick two similar garments intended for the same use. Measure their flat chest width, length and any area that matters to you using matching measurement points. Compare washed items with care, since the product specification may describe a new garment.

Make your comparison repeatable

  1. Record the product, department and shopping market for each item.
  2. Use your body chest with body charts; use garment dimensions with a reference garment.
  3. Check the intended fit and whether you will wear layers underneath.
  4. Check length separately, including any tall or cropped options.
  5. Keep missing measurements marked as unknown when requesting a personal analysis.

Common questions

Is Nike M equivalent to adidas L?

Not as a general conversion. The 40-inch example falls in those rows for the reviewed US men's tops charts, but other measurements, departments and individual garments require their own checks.

Can this table convert Nike and adidas shoe sizes?

No. Footwear uses different charts and foot measurements. The comparison here is explicitly limited to men's tops body chest ranges.
