A useful T-shirt fit lets you move comfortably and gives you the silhouette you intended. Check chest room and length separately, then look at the shoulder and sleeve design. A dropped shoulder can be intentional in an oversized tee, so seam position alone cannot determine whether the size is wrong.
Choose the result before judging the label
Write a simple target: close under a jacket, regular for everyday wear, or wide and boxy. Keep a T-shirt that already achieves that result as your reference. Comparing an oversized candidate with a fitted undershirt answers a different question from replacing a favourite everyday tee.
Nike's oversized collection describes a relaxed body and dropped shoulders. That is one example of why a shoulder seam below the shoulder edge can belong to the design rather than indicate an accidental sizing error.
Check four areas together
| Area | What to check | What a size change may miss |
|---|---|---|
| Chest | Comfort while reaching forward; the amount of fabric you want | A different fabric can drape differently at the same width |
| Shoulders and sleeves | Intended seam placement and room to lift your arms | Dropped shoulders change where sleeve length starts |
| Body length | Hem position standing, sitting and reaching | A wider boxy cut can still be short |
| Neck and hem | The opening and coverage you prefer | Changing size alters several dimensions together |
Compare width and length independently
Lay both tees flat without pulling the fabric. Use the retailer's stated chest measuring point for each. For a pit-to-pit measurement, record the width across the garment, not a tape measurement around your body. For length, match the starting point as well as the endpoint.
Illustrative example: a reference tee measures 20.5 inches across and 28 inches long; a candidate measures 22 inches across and 27 inches long. The candidate is 1.5 inches wider but 1 inch shorter. Decide whether both changes suit your target before choosing it.
When another cut makes more sense
If the width is right but the hem is too short, investigate a longer cut or length option. If the length is right but you want less fabric around the middle, compare the silhouette. Repeatedly moving up or down a size can leave the original proportion problem unresolved.
Use the calculator once for flat chest width and once for length. The result describes the dimensional difference only; try-on comfort, fabric recovery and your style preference still need separate judgment.
Compare two garment measurements
Use the same measurement points on two similar garments. This calculates a dimensional difference, not a recommended clothing size.
Common questions
Should a T-shirt's shoulder seam sit exactly on my shoulder?
That depends on the intended construction. A conventional set-in sleeve and a dropped-shoulder oversized tee should not be judged by the same seam position.
Should I size up for a relaxed T-shirt?
Compare the next size's width and length first. A tee designed with a relaxed silhouette may produce your desired shape more directly than a larger size in a narrow cut.
